Hello, my name is Ian Walters. I am a qualified provider of individual adult psychotherapy services and an experienced couples/relationship counsellor. I am a fully Accredited Member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MIACP), a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in the US state of Washington and a Professional Member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). Therapeutic Approach:
My practice involves working with individuals, couples, and families. My approach comes from an existential, humanistic and systemic perspective - situating each individual's experiences within the context of family relationships and societal and cultural influences. I am particularly sensitive to the ways each individual’s identity with regard to gender, age, race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, relationship orientation, class background, disability, and country of origin influences the messages they receive from society and the way they think and feel about themselves.
During counselling sessions, I will carefully listen to your stories and experiences. I will follow up with questions about your life and relationships, both past and present. I will use various therapeutic techniques to help you explore further the messages you have internalized about yourself, your relationships, and the world. Often, the problems we experience presently are related to situations in the past and, as humans, we can get attached to how we approach our lives, even when that approach no longer seems to be working or serving us well. Together, we will find the links to previous hurts or unmet needs and create new narratives to change current feelings and behaviours.
Education and Training:
I earned my Masters of Arts in Psychology from Antioch University Seattle's School of Applied Psychology. My degree specialization was in Couple and Family Therapy. As part of my graduate training I completed an 18-month internship at a Seattle area community mental health agency serving children, teens, and families. Postgraduate work included three years of supervised clinical experience in private practice. I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree from Dickinson College, where I focused my work on Dramatic Arts, Philosophy, and Psychology
